Internship Opportunities

The Children’s Home of Lubbock offers a limited number of unpaid internships to qualifying students each semester. These opportunities establish hands-on experience that expands an individual’s understanding and skillset. If selected, appropriate training for each role will be required based on the field of interest, along with other key documents. Please contact our office if you have questions or seek a different field of interest not seen below.

Note: All applicants must have a valid Driver’s License, seek 90+ hours of course credit, provide an academic plan and meet licensing standards in regard to criminal background check, fingerprinting, and drug screening. They must be at least 18 years if seeking an administrative internship and 21 years if seeking interest in social services. General requirements also include strong writing, comprehension, and organizational skills

Counseling

Position Overview: 
The Counseling Department provides insightful and healing guidance to each child on campus. Graduate students can work alongside their team to learn about the impact trauma informed care can have on the children we serve.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Shadow experienced counselors as they work and support children on campus.
  • Interact with children to establish a foundation of trust and comfort throughout sessions.
  • Review each session to discuss areas of improvement, support, and strategy.
  • Attend and participate in Sanctuary groups with children and youth.

Public Relations

Position Overview:
The Children’s Home of Lubbock is seeking a creative and mission-minded Public Relations Intern to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit communications, social media, graphic design, media relations, and publication support. The intern will work closely with the Public Relations Coordinator to help promote the mission, events, programs, and community impact of Children’s Home of Lubbock through various communication channels.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Social Media & Digital Content:
    • Assist with content creation for CHOL’s social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.).
    • Design graphics, flyers, and digital assets using tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
    • Help schedule posts and track engagement.
    • Ensure all digital content adheres to CHOL’s brand standards and voice.
  • Publications:
    • Support the development and production of the quarterly external magazine, including gathering stories, writing content, and assisting with layout and design.
    • Assist with creating and distributing the monthly internal staff newsletter.
    • Ensure publication materials are consistent with CHOL’s brand guidelines.
  • Media Relations:
    • Help draft press releases, media advisories, and other communications materials.
    • Research and expand CHOL’s list of local news, radio, and community media contacts.
    • Assist in building stronger relationships with media outlets.
  • Archiving & Historical Projects:
    • Help digitize and organize old photographs and historical documents for the organization’s archives.
    • Assist with creating content that highlights CHOL’s history and impact.
  • General Support:
    • Participate in brainstorming sessions for campaigns, events, and storytelling projects.
    • Assist with additional writing, editing, and graphic design tasks as needed.
    • Attend occasional special events or activities to gather content or assist with media coverage.

Recreation

Position Overview: 

The recreation team is seeking an energetic and creative intern who shares a passion for children and physical education. This individual will work alongside the team to implement activities, aid in organization, and establish a fun and safe environment for children in care.
Key Responsibilities: 
    • Take all required in-person and online trainings required by State and licensing standards.
    • Complete 40 hours of supervision with on-site supervisor while with kids.
    • Prepare adequately for each activity every day including gathering necessary materials, ensuring spaces are ready, and cleaning up spaces when the activity is over.
    • Assist recreation teams with any seasonal, monthly, or weekly projects.
    • Fill out activity forms after an activity has taken place to ensure accurate data is kept for the Children’s Home.
    • Accompany the recreation team during afternoon bus rides.

Social Work

GRO- Position Overview: 
Work alongside a case manager in our Group Residential Operation to learn more about social services and the trauma informed care we provide our children. This opportunity will showcase the coordination, training, and treatment needed to keep our children safe and on the path of healing.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Take all required in-person and online trainings required by state and licensing standards.
  • Assist with electronic and paper documentation, including monthly case notes and plans of service.
  • Shadow cottage inspections and occasional appointments.
  • Provide data entry and documentation support as needed.
  • Aid in compliance by checking paperwork, filing, and providing corrections as needed.
 
Foster Care- Position Overview: 
Work alongside a case manager in our Foster Care Department to learn more about social services and how fostering can impact the community. This individual will observe the process of placing a child in care and how resources/support can be provided throughout their case.
Key Responsibilities: 
  • Take all required in-person and online trainings required by state and licensing standards.
  • Provide data entry and documentation support using Extended Reach software.
  • Shadow placements, home visits, plans of service, and family support meetings.
  • Assist with electronic and paper documentation, including intake notes.
  • Aid in compliance by checking paperwork, filing, and providing corrections as needed.

Development

Position Overview:
The Development Department is seeking a motivated and relationship-focused intern interested in learning more about nonprofit fundraising and donor engagement. This individual will gain hands-on experience supporting fundraising campaigns, donor stewardship, special events, and development operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with donor stewardship, thank-you letters, and other donor communications.
  • Support fundraising campaigns, appeals, and special events.
  • Assist with donor research and prospect identification.
  • Help maintain and organize donor records and development materials.
  • Assist with event preparation, sponsorship fulfillment, and donor recognition.
  • Help prepare materials for donor visits, tours, and community presentations.
  • Participate in brainstorming and planning for fundraising and donor engagement strategies.
  • Provide general administrative support for the Development Department as needed.

Human Resources

Position Overview:
The Human Resources Department is seeking an organized and professional intern interested in gaining experience in nonprofit human resources. This individual will learn more about employee onboarding, personnel records, recruitment, training, and day-to-day HR operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with organizing and maintaining employee files and HR documentation.
  • Support employee onboarding and orientation processes.
  • Assist with recruitment activities, including job postings and applicant materials.
  • Help prepare materials for staff trainings and employee activities.
  • Assist with data entry, filing, and general HR administrative tasks.
  • Learn about HR policies, procedures, and licensing requirements within a child welfare organization.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when working with employee information.
  • Support additional HR projects as needed.

Church Engagement

Position Overview:
The Church Engagement Intern will work alongside our team to help strengthen relationships between the Children’s Home of Lubbock and churches throughout our community. This individual will gain experience in community outreach, relationship building, volunteer engagement, and nonprofit ministry partnerships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with outreach to local churches and ministry partners.
  • Help maintain and organize church contact and partnership information.
  • Support the Adopt-A-Cottage program and other church engagement initiatives.
  • Assist with coordinating church volunteer opportunities, donation drives, fundraisers, and special projects.
  • Help prepare materials for church presentations, meetings, and outreach.
  • Assist with follow-up communication and stewardship of church partners.
  • Research potential church and ministry partnerships in Lubbock and surrounding communities.
  • Attend occasional church or community events representing the Children’s Home of Lubbock.
  • Support additional Church Engagement projects as needed.
